Santtu: Sibelius and Nielsen

Principal Conductor Santtu opens the second concert in the Philharmonia’s Nordic Soundscapes series with one of Sibelius’ most popular works.

Playful, rippling flutes depict the Oceanides, sea nymphs of Greek mythology.

Bomsori Kim, called ‘one of the most exciting young violinists around’ by BBC Music Magazine, treats us to Nielsen’s Violin Concerto, as bold and good-humoured as Nielsen himself.

At the heart of this programme is the first of three new pieces in Nordic Soundscapes accompanying incredible films by Joakim Odelberg.

Explore the underwater worlds around the Nordic coastline, and see fascinating aquatic wildlife up close on the Royal Festival Hall’s huge screen.

Sibelius has the last word in this captivating programme – his Symphony No.3 sweeps listeners up in its confident, warm energy right from the start, and packs many pleasures into its half-hour span.
